West Ham could end up selling Craig Dawson in the January transfer window and Rangers have seriously got to consider rivalling Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa to bring the experienced centre-back to Ibrox in the coming months.

Dawson, 32, is in the final year of his contract at West Ham. That is, despite shining for David Moyes over the last two seasons. Last term, he clocked up 50 outings and overall, has scored an impressive nine goals for the Hammers.

Reports claim that while West Ham would like to keep Dawson, they may have to cash in. The £7million-rated defender wanted a move to Aston Villa towards the end of the deadline. Understandably so, given he is now fifth choice.

Nayef Aguerd and Thilo Kehrer have joined, Kurt Zouma has returned and Angelo Ogbonna is back from injury. So, Dawson has fallen down the pecking order and Villa may still be keen. But Rangers could really do with him.

Rangers have got to rival Villa boss Gerrard for West Ham’s Dawson

The Rangers defence have struggled this season. 20 goals have already been conceded in 14 games, keeping just five clean sheets. James Sands has often partnered Connor Goldson but he is hardly the long-term answer at Ibrox.

Ben Davies has not been given a chance as of yet, and Filip Helander remains a long-term absentee with injury. So, Rangers could do with a reliable, experienced option at centre-back. Dawson completely fits the bill.

Cheap at £7million, which is likely to be reduced in January given the proximity of his contract ending, he is easily affordable. Potential European football after Christmas, and a leader that they clearly lack in defence.

If Rangers are in the market for a centre-back in the next window, Dawson without question fits the bill. Could they tempt him north of the border if Premier League clubs, such as Gerrard’s Villa, are interested? Time will tell.
