Rangers should not take the cheap route and bring James Collins to Ibrox.

West Ham defender James Collins reacts during the Premier League match between Sunderland and West Ham United at Stadium of Light on April 15, 2017 in Sunderland, England.

Rangers are reportedly considering bringing James Collins to Ibrox as a free agent, according to the Scottish Sun.

Collins was recently released after nine years in East London and Rangers are considering a move.

Wales international Collins is an experienced head at 34, but he is just a stop gap for Rangers.

Steven Gerrard is better off concentrating Rangers’ efforts towards Collins’ recent Hammers teammate Reece Burke.

Centre-back Burke could have been in line to profit from Collins’ departure, but he does not appear to be in West Ham’s plans.

According to The Times, West Ham are willing to listen to offers for Burke and could sell.

The Mirror had earlier reported Rangers are keen on signing Burke, who spent much of last season on loan with Bolton.

Burke would cost Rangers money, as opposed to Collins who is a free agent, but this is a case where the Ibrox side should be happy to pay more.

The youngster is just 21, and potentially has more than a decade left at a high level.

Collins is on the way down, and may just have one or two years remaining.

Gerrard is under pressure to deliver early at Rangers, but he must not lose sight of a long term vision and repeat mistakes of previous managers by hoping bargain veterans like Joey Barton and Bruno Alves can solve the Gers’ problems.
