Glasgow Rangers have reportedly considered trying to bring Gareth McAuley to Ibrox this summer, but now face competition.

Heading into the final days of the transfer window, Steven Gerrard is still looking for another signing who can provide depth at the heart of the Rangers defence.
Despite the emergence of Connor Goldson as an incredible signing and Nikola Katic showing plenty of potential, Rangers probably do not have the numbers to cope with too many injuries in that area of the field so it would be little surprise if signing a new centre-back was one of Gerrard’s major priorities before the deadline.
One player he has reportedly considered this summer is Gareth McAuley, with the Daily Record reporting in June that the former West Brom man had been on the Gers’ radar following his release by the Baggies.
It is unclear whether Gerrard remains interested in signing the 38-year-old, but given the latest reports from The Scottish Sun regarding McAuley’s future, it would appear that now is the time for Rangers to step up their interest and make sure that they get something done.

Rangers however, should not allow their two league rivals to land McAuley. The veteran could be a superb signing on a free transfer given that he would only be arriving at Ibrox as cover for Katic and Goldson.

His age may put Gerrard off, but he arguably enjoyed the best years of his career a lot later than most centre-backs do, and he appears to be threatening to show the same longevity that David Weir had during his playing days.
He would not be a marquee addition, but given that he would arrive on a free transfer and brings bags of Premier League experience with him, Rangers must not allow another team to bring him north of the border this summer.
