Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in bringing James McArthur to Ibrox at the end of the season.

If the Rangers board needed anymore convincing, their latest performance confirmed that the Gers need a significant summer overhaul of their squad if they hope to close the gap to Celtic by a substantial amount next season.

The Light Blues were torn apart. Beaten 5-0, Graeme Murty seemed powerless as he watched his goalkeeper pick the ball out of the net on five occasions and yet, still prove to be the Rangers player who emerged from the game with the most credit.

Showing ambition this summer has to be a priority, and based on James McArthur’s latest performance, doing all they can to make sure that he ends the window as a Rangers player has to be a priority.

The Daily Mail reported last week that the Gers wanted to sign the 30-year-old as his Crystal Palace contract ran down. But, while the Light Blues wanted to land the midfielder, the Mail noted that he was most likely going to stay in England.

It may be unlikely, but Rangers should all they can to try and convince McArthur – who reportedly earns £50,000-a-week at Selhurst Park, according to Spotrac – to make the move to Ibrox.

The former Hamilton ace set up Palace’s first goal in the 5-0 win over Leicester City with a brilliant flick, before doubling the home side’s lead shortly before the break. It was a display that would have reminded many of the kind of quality that McArthur has.

Against Celtic on Sunday, it could be counted on one hand the number of times that Rangers’ players produced a moment of quality that rivalled their opponents, and some fingers would probably still not be required.

Having McArthur would not have changed the result too dramatically perhaps, but a summer deal for the midfielder and a few further transfers of a similar calibre are undoubtedly required, and his display on Saturday just proved how influential he could be.
