Glasgow Rangers should undoubtedly put themselves in the mix in the hope that they can bring the 28-year-old to Ibrox this summer.

According to a report from The Sun at the weekend, Sheffield Wednesday are ready to get Jordan Rhodes off their books this summer by loaning the 28-year-old out. And if that proves to be the case, Rangers must make sure that they are in the mix.

Rhodes has endured a fairly miserable time since joining the Owls. The £10 million signing has scored just seven goals in 46 Championship appearances for Wednesday, so it is little surprise that they are ready to let the Scotland international leave at the end of the season.

Despite his struggles at Hillsborough, it would not be a shock if a queue of clubs formed in the wake of the report in the hope that they could land Rhodes on loan for next season as he has previously been lethal in the Football League, scoring 73 and 83 league goals for Huddersfield Town and Blackburn Rovers respectively.

That kind of record should tempt the Gers to make their own move during the summer. Alfredo Morelos has been extremely promising during his first season, but his recent form shows that he still has some way to go before he realises his full potential. Meanwhile, Jason Cummings is on loan with the Light Blues and has arguably put in his best performance to date in a wider role rather than as a central striker.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Kilmarnock at Ibrox Stadium on March 17, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

The club confirmed when they signed Cummings that they could make the move permanent, but perhaps Graeme Murty, or whoever is in charge next season, should look to sign Rhodes in the summer even if they also bring the Nottingham Forest-owned forward in on a permanent basis.

The Sun reports that Wednesday are even prepared to pay the majority of Rhodes’ wages. And the Owls would surely prefer to loan the striker out to a Scottish Premiership side rather than a divisional rival who could haunt Wednesday if they get Rhodes firing again.

If Rangers make a move and manage to get Rhodes through the door at Ibrox, and then subsequently get the striker back to his best, it would undoubtedly be a masterstroke from the Gers, and may help them clear that final hurdle next season that looks set to prove just too big for them this year.
