Rangers were reportedly keen on bringing Jermain Defoe to Ibrox over the summer.

It’s no great secret that Rangers are in the market for a striker in the January transfer window, with The Express noting that a new goalscorer is a top priority for Steven Gerrard.

Alfredo Morelos is starring, but Kyle Lafferty has suffered some injury and fitness problems, whilst Roma loanee Umar Sadiq has been a complete flop at Ibrox.

Finding a third striker will now be a huge priority for January, and Rangers should be considering one player that Gerrard was allegedly keen on over the summer.

The Scottish Sun reported over the summer that Gerrard wanted to bring Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe to Ibrox, but no deal was done in the end.

Now, the Sheffield Star report that Sheffield United are keen to sign Defoe, but if the Championship side have a legitimate shot at signing him, then Rangers should absolutely return with a move.

The 36-year-old has played just 22 minutes of Premier League action this season, and may be looking for one more big move to play regularly before calling time on his career.

Reuniting with former England teammate Gerrard could work for Defoe, offering a proven goalscorer to compete with Morelos and Lafferty whilst ending Sadiq’s almost pointless Rangers career.

Defoe still has enough left in the tank to be a goalscorer for Rangers, whilst also being a great resource for younger strikers like Morelos and Andy Dallas, and if Bournemouth are willing to let him go, then Rangers should be back in for Defoe in January.
