Glasgow Rangers are reportedly keen on bringing Kieran Dowell to Ibrox, but they should also look at his teammate.

While Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is not short of options at centre-back, he would be forgiven for thinking that he could do with making one quality signing in that position in January.

The Gers have not settled on a pairing this season, with Nikola Katic, Joe Worrall and now Gareth McAuley all getting a chance alongside Connor Goldson.

Goldson has certainly been the most impressive signing of the four so far. But even he appears to be struggling slightly, perhaps due to the rotating that is being done alongside him.

One club that Gerrard is expected to reach out to in January is Everton. The Liverpool Echo reports that the Gers want to sign Kieran Dowell on loan as they look to improve their attacking options.

But he is not the only Toffees ace looking set to leave temporarily in January. Another report from the Liverpool Echo has suggested that they will also give Mason Holgate the green light to head out for the rest of the campaign.

And Rangers should put themselves at the front of the queue for the 22-year-old.

Holgate – who cost £2 million in 2015, according to ESPN – has played 48 times in all competitions since joining Everton, with 33 of those appearances coming from Premier League starts. He may have struggled for game-time under Marco Silva, but he could arguably be a quality addition for Gerrard’s men.

He already has the ability and experience to be the player that actually stamps his authority on the position alongside Goldson at the heart of the defence. And given that he would arrive on loan, he would leave Gerrard with most of his funds in tact as he looks to make the additions that will keep their title challenge going.
