Motherwell striker Louis Moult reportedly interested Derby County in January – but Rangers fans would be keen for him to move to Ibrox.

Motherwell's Louis Moult celebrates scoring their first goal

The fact that Motherwell striker Louis Moult has comfortably outscored every player in Rangers’ squad is either a testament to his own impressive form this season or a surefire sign that Pedro Caixinha is crying out for a new striker.

And, in fact, Moult could be the perfect solution. After all, the Portuguese manager may have only been working in Scotland for just over a month but he’s already more than aware of the 24-year-old’s talents.

Opening the scoring at Ibrox inside the first three minutes of this month’s 1-1 draw, Moult’s instinctive finish moved him onto 12 Scottish Premiership goals for the season. And, in the process, only reaffirmed the notion long held by many Rangers fans that he would be the ideal man to lead their attack.

The six foot striker is only three goals away from matching last season’s impressive goals tally of 15, and in 13 fewer games. He is in the form of his life at present and justifying Motherwell’s decision to hand him a lifeline after he tumbled into non-league with Nuneaton Town and Wrexham United.

And, blessed with impressive hold-up play and the ability to sniff out chances inside the box, Moult has since evolved into one of the Scottish Premiership’s most feared forwards.

As such, The Sun reported in January that his form had piqued the interest of Derby County. The Rams are badly in need of a clinical goalscorer with their lack of finesse in front of goal undermining their hopes of pushing for the play-offs this season.

Although excellent form in Scotland is no guarantee of success in the Championship (see Kris Boyd, below, and Stevie May), Moult clearly has the raw attributes to succeed.

Though, if Caixinha wants to close the gap to the top two next season, Moult has proven that he would be an excellent addition to their frontline. In fact, he may be everything Rangers wanted Joe Garner to be.
