Reece Oxford joined Reading on loan in January despite Rangers hoping to take the teenager on loan from West Ham United.

Who knows where Reece Oxford would be right now had he not snubbed the chance to join Rangers in the January transfer window.

The Sun reported that Mark Warburton’s Gers were hoping to land the West Ham wonderkid on loan for the second half of last season with the promise of giving him the game-time he needed to develop.

Instead, Oxford joined Championship promotion chasers Reading – a move that seemed to spark an unexpected decline for one of the most exciting youngsters to emerge in English football over the last few years.

Oxford barely featured at Reading and has also struggled since joining Bundesliga giants Borussia Monchengladbach on a two-year deal in the summer. The Sun report that the 18-year-old could even return to England early after failing to make a single appearance in Germany.

And The Mirror is now reporting that West Ham could even be willing to sell arguably their prized asset after he fell on the wrong side of manager Slaven Bilic.

Though you wonder whether making the move to Rangers, 12 months after failing to agree a short-term move to Ibrox, is exactly what Oxford needs.

The teenage centre-back, likened to former Hammers youngster Rio Ferdinand for his composure in possession, has only featured six times for the club’s first-team since earning rave reviews when making his Premier League debut as a 16-year-old in a 2-0 win at Arsenal on the opening day of 2015/16.

Rangers, however, should give Oxford a far greater chance of first-team football – especially with Pedro Caixinha willing to give a chance to the Ibrox giants’ talented youngsters.

A year on, a January move to Rangers should seem far more tempting for Oxford.
