Rangers are just two points behind Celtic in the title race.

Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has been urged to consider a move for his former England teammate Ashley Cole.

Cole is a free agent after being released by LA Galaxy and former footballer Ray Parlour told SkySports’ The Debate (27/11) that Gerrard should try to bring Cole to Ibrox.

Rangers already have options at left-back, signing Borna Barisic in the summer. Jon Flanagan and Andy Halliday can also both feature in the position and have done this season.

Long term it makes no sense for Rangers to sign Cole, as he won’t play a future role, and he could harm Barisic’s prospects.

There is only one compelling case for Rangers to bring him in, and that is if Gerrard believes it will make a difference in this year’s title battle.

There is a long way to go, and simply pushing Celtic all the way to the final week would be considered impressive progress for Rangers.

A move for Cole would show this Rangers side are in ‘win now’ mode and believe the title is achievable this season.

It will show there is confidence that they can close the gap, and a little bit of fine tuning can push them over the edge.
