Rangers star Alfredo Morelos faces a sweat to make this summer’s Copa America after the Colombian striker was confirmed to have tested positive for Covid 19 while on international duty.
Morelos is one of two people within the Colombian camp to have tested postive, ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Argentina next week.
Once those two fixtures are completed, then its on to Copa America duty with Colombia due to face Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru and Brazil between June 15 and June 22.
In a statement released on their official website, the Colombian national team confirmed Morelos’ positive test, insisting the Rangers star remains in “good health”, saying: “The technical staff of the Colombia male senior team reports that, following biosafety protocols, RT PCR tests were carried out and two positive cases for Covid-19 were found, the player Alfredo Morelos and the kinesiologist José Rendón.
“After knowing the positive results, following the protocols, the respective isolation of the two people was carried out, who at the moment are in good health.”
Agonising wait for Morelos
Morelos will now face an agonising wait to see if he makes it for Copa America after an excellent season for Rangers.
The Colombian has been key for Steven Gerrard’s side as they romped to the title and it would bbe gutting for Morelos to miss out on the finals for a second successive time.
With his country having already lost their hosting rights for the competition, Morelos will still be desperate to make the squad and represent his country at a major tournament.
If he doesn’t develop symptoms, Morelos could make it back in time for the second of the World Cup qualifiers – but with the Copa America squad still to be confirmed, missing one of the two might leave him fighting an uphill battle to make the final squad.
