Rangers should sell “inconsistent” Alfredo Morelos this summer and “take the money” for the Colombian international – according to former Gers striker and director of football Gordon Smith.
The Colombian has been the focus of constant transfer speculation over his time in Scotland but Smith thinks it is time for the Gers to cash in, admitting he was surprised to hear they had rejected a bid of £18million last year.
Despite El Bufalo having overtaken Ally McCoist as the club’s all-time European goalscorer and hitting 94 goals and 43 assists in 182 appearances, Smith remarkably only thinks he’s done a ‘fair’ job at Rangers.
“If it was me that was making the decision, I would sell him. I’d take the money if I could,” Smith told the Daily Record.
“It’s hard to say (how much) but I’d heard they had turned down around £18million for him last season or at the beginning of this season.
“I was quite surprised at that. Somebody told me that they turned it down because they were negotiating and thought they could get £20million.
“But the thing about it is, he’s done a really simple job, he’s inconsistent in a lot of respects and for me, he still needs to come on a little bit and he still needs to be more consistent in terms of the role that he plays.

“He’s done a fair job, to be fair, but Defoe is a better player – if he was younger.”
While Morleos may well end up being sold this summer, it is massively wide of the mark to say he’s been inconsistent since his move from HJK Helsinki four years ago.
The Colombian has been absolutely vital for the Light Blues at home and in Europe over the last few years and it is clear to see that Rangers are a far poorer side without him in the team.
Perhaps Smith has seen something that the overwhelming majority of Rangers fans haven’t but his record since moving to the club speaks for itself.
