Glasgow Rangers pair Alfredo Morelos and Jamie Murphy seemed to have formed a very exciting partnership.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty is seen during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Aberdeen at Ibrox Stadium on January 24, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Several of Rangers’ attacking players emerged from their Scottish Premiership clash with Hamilton Academical at the weekend having earned a number of plaudits from the supporters for their displays.

Josh Windass scored a hat-trick, Alfredo Morelos continued his excellent run of form in front of goal and Jamie Murphy provided a real indication that he may be a brilliant signing for Graeme Murty’s side.

But while each of their individual performances were impressive – and they were not the only ones to catch the eye – it was arguably the understanding that seemed to be developing between Morelos and Murphy that should be exciting Murty heading into the final months of the season.

It was Morelos who set up Murphy for Rangers’ first goal as the Colombian managed to cut the ball back to the winger who had made a smart run towards the front post. Many would have probably expected Morelos to have an attempt on goal from the tight angle, but he unselfishly picked out the run from Murphy that few probably noticed before the ball was in his path.

And it was a similar tale for Rangers’ third. Murphy was quickest to react to the Hamilton goalkeeper’s save, but rather than try and squeeze the ball under the keeper, he slid the ball across to Morelos, who was able to take advantage of the fact that the three Accies defenders anticipated another shot from Murphy and left the striker with plenty of space.

It may only be two goals, but they arguably hinted that Morelos and Murphy are having absolutely no problem getting on the same page, and Murty’s men are already reaping the rewards of that.

After the game against Ayr earlier in the month when Murty deployed Morelos alongside Jason Cummings as part of a front two, there was some encouraging signs that the pair may be able to build a strong partnership. But after the win over Hamilton, perhaps it is actually Murphy who is set to enjoy the kind of understanding with Morelos that will bring the best out of both men.
