Morecambe manager Derek Adams has insisted reported interest from Rangers in 15-goal star Carlos Mendes Gomes is purely “speculation” until a bid is put in for the former Atletico Madrid youngster.
Steven Gerrard’s side have been named as possible suitors, according to The Scottish Sun, for the 22-year-old who as impressed for Adams’ side but the former Plymouth Argyle and Ross County boss admits it is “not beneficial” to talk about the “situation.”
The Morecambe star, was born in Senegal, but moved to Spain at a young age, is out of contract in the summer and has had a remarkable career so far after starting off at Atleti.
After an enforced move to England for family reasons, the winger eventually ended up having to drop down to non-league with West Didsbury and Chorlton before signing for Morecambe in 2018.
While he refused to be drawn on Mendes Gomes’ future, Adams did admit it is “something positive” to see clubs linked with moves for his players.
“It’s not beneficial for me, the club or Carlos to say what the situation is, but I’m very comfortable with it as I’ve said all along,” Adam said, as quoted by the Daily Record.
“Until there’s a bid put in for any of our players, speculation is all it is.
“It is a good thing to have though. If other clubs are being linked with your players, it means something positive must be happening.
“Carlos is a fantastic boy, you can tell that by his work ethic in training and in games.
“You could see that on Tuesday with the goal he scored and his overall performance.”
