Rangers were linked with bringing James Vaughan to Ibrox.
Bury’s James Vaughan scores
When Mark Warburton reflects on his Glasgow Rangers exit, he may realise one of his biggest mistakes was not following his assistant’s transfer tip last summer.
The Scottish Sun reported last June that number two David Weir had recommended Warburton make a move to sign Birmingham City’s James Vaughan, who was coming off a disappointing season.
Weir played alongside Vaughan at Everton and knew all about his potential, but Rangers did not end up pushing a deal for the striker.
It looks to be a great shame, because Vaughan has flourished since, and Warburton and Weir both find themselves out of a job.
Birmingham let Vaughan leave on a free transfer to sign for League One side Bury, and he made an immediate impact.
Already he has scored 18 goals, which have come in 25 league appearances.
Through his career Vaughan has struggled with injuries but has had no issues this campaign.
Rangers find themselves 30 points behind Celtic, and their troubles are highlighted by their blunt strikeforce.
Veteran Kenny Miller is their top goalscorer with six goals, while summer signing Joe Garner has four. By contrast rivals Celtic have three players in double figures with Moussa Dembele leading the way with 18.
Rangers should be regretting not moving for an 18 goal forward of their own.
