Rangers allegedly wanted to bring Matty Willock to Ibrox.
Rangers have today tied up a deal to bring Greg Stewart to Ibrox – but they appear to have missed out on another signing in Matty Willock.
The Gers made Stewart their fourth signing, and as they pursue a creative midfield player, they allegedly looked to bring Willock to Glasgow.
The 22-year-old has been released by Manchester United, and was looking for a club after loan spells with FC Utrecht, St Johnstone, St Mirren and Crawley Town.
Today, Willock found his new home, penning a two-year deal with League One side Gillingham in something of a coup for Steve Evans’ side.
Bizarrely, Gillingham claimed in their official press release that they beat Rangers to signing Willock, as well as fending off Championship sides.
Boss Evans went on to say that he thinks Willock is an ‘outstanding talent’, and can’t wait for the Gillingham fans to see him in action for the next two years.
It would be strange for Gillingham to make that Rangers claim if it wasn’t true, and first-team football may have been the reason for choosing Gillingham over a move to Ibrox.
Rangers will have other names in mind, and after a patchy record so far, fans won’t be too upset at losing out on Willock – if they actually did.
