Rangers have missed out on Marijan Cabraja with highly-rated wideman sealing a deadline-day move from HNK Gorica to Dinamo Zagreb, as reported by Sportske Novosti.
Three years after the Glasgow giants snapped up Borna Barisic in what has proved to be a brilliant piece of business, it seemed that Steven Gerrard’s side were looking to repeat the trick with another Croatian left-back.
Speaking to the Daily Record before Christmas, 23-year-old Cabraja admitted that Rangers had been in touch.
Whether they were willing to pay the hefty fee Gorica wanted for their much-coveted wideman, however, was another issue altogether.
“It is true that Rangers are following me, contact has been established but it all depends on how the situation with Borna Barisic develops,” said Cabraja.
Reading between the lines, this sounds a whole lot like Rangers wanted Cabraja as a potential replacement for their rampaging, set-piece specialist.
“I don’t believe that the Scots will pay as much as Gorica are asking for,” he added.
Fortunately for Rangers, Barisic is going nowhere just yet. Despite enjoying his finest and most consistent season at Ibrox yet, reports linking the former Osijek star with a big-money move to England or Italy have dried up.
So, with Barisic seemingly here to stay, Gers fans won’t be suffering from too many sleepless nights as Cabraja packs his bags and heads for Zagreb.
“Good luck Marijan Cabraja, from tomorrow (he will be in) Dinamo,” said Gorica president Nenad Crnko.
Crnko did not reveal how much Dinamo Zagreb will pay for Cabraja but Sportske Novosti believe the fee will be in the region of £2 million.
