Glasgow Rangers could have suffered a blow ahead of the Ibrox side’s return to Scottish Premiership action this weekend.

Scott Arfield of Rangers controls the ball during the Ladbrokes Premiership match between Livingston and Rangers at Almondvale Stadium on September 30, 2018 in Livingston, Scotland.

In comments reported by the Daily Record, Canada boss John Herdman has suggested that Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield may not feature in the country’s next game due to an injury – in news that is bound to give Steven Gerrard cause for concern ahead of the Gers’ return to action this weekend.

The Record reports that Arfield picked up a hamstring injury in training on Sunday and sat out Monday’s session, instead going for a scan. And Herdman has now suggested that he may well not play against Dominica because of the problem.

“If we don’t need to play him in this match, we won’t. It’s all precautionary for him. He doesn’t need to go put himself on the line at this stage,” he said, as reported by the Daily Record.

It is perhaps encouraging that Herdman’s comments suggest that the door is not completely closed on Arfield featuring on Tuesday.

While Rangers fans would much rather that he was now wrapped up in cotton wool and sent back to Ibrox immediately, the fact that he is not definitively ruled out could be a positive sign for the Gers.

After a slightly underwhelming start to life with Rangers, Arfield appears to have found some excellent form, having scored three goals in his last five games for the Gers, including one of the goals in the dramatic 2-2 draw with Villarreal.

Any absence would be a big blow for Rangers. After they return to Scottish Premiership action to face Hamilton, they take on Spartak Moscow looking to retain top spot in their Europa League group and then face Aberdeen at Hampden Park in the semi-final of the League Cup.

There are very few games that are not key ones for a club like Rangers, but this is undoubtedly one run of fixtures that could prove crucial come the end of the campaign.
