The Rangers midfielder, who is due to return to training on Monday after a three week club ban, has been given a notice of complaint by the SFA.

Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has been charged by the Scottish Football Association over an alleged breach of betting on 44 football matches.
The SFA have stated that the games took place between: “July 1 and September 15 2016 and that Barton has until Wednesday 12 October to respond to the complaint. With a principal hearing date set for 27 October.”
Former England international Barton was issued with a notice of complaint from Scotland’s governing body on Wednesday afternoon and if found guilty he could face a ban from playing.

The full statement from the SFA on their official website reads: “Disciplinary Rule 31: In that between 1st July and 15th September 2016, both dates inclusive, you placed 44 bets upon football matches, and accordingly gambled upon football matches in contravention of Disciplinary Rule 31.”

It was reported by the Daily Mail last month that Barton was under investigation from the SFA after it was claimed that he had bet on Celtic to lose heavily to Barcelona in their first fixture in this season’s Champions League.
Barton joined Rangers in the summer on a free transfer after deciding to join the Scottish club from Premier League outfit Burnley.
The 34-year-old will return to training on Monday after a three week ban from his club following an internal dispute. He was initially banned for five days, but it was extended for three weeks after talks with manager Mark Warburton.
