Rangers boss Michael Beale hasn’t exactly played down links to Todd Cantwell having praised the Norwich City ace as a ‘fantastic’ player.

The Scottish Sun reported on Saturday evening that Rangers are interested in signing Norwich playmaker Cantwell.

It was suggested that new Rangers boss Beale had placed Cantwell on his wish list of potential January signings.

It’s unclear just when Rangers will strike for Cantwell though.

The 24-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and Rangers could strike a pre-contract agreement.

Alternatively, Rangers could chase a cut-price deal this month – something Norwich may well be very open to given his contract situation.

Rangers boss Beale hails ‘fantastic player’ Cantwell

Rangers would seem to have real hope of a deal this month.

Cantwell wasn’t even in the squad as Norwich lost 1-0 to Blackburn Rovers on Sunday.

New boss David Wagner simply left him out of the squad as he looks to make his mark on the Norwich side.

Cantwell just hasn’t been at his best for a while now and he clearly needs a fresh start to try and get his career back on track.

Rangers could offer that and boss Beale hasn’t exactly played down talk of Cantwell heading to Ibrox this month.

Beale has told the Daily Record that he thinks Cantwell was ‘excellent’ as a kid, particularly shining against Liverpool’s Under-23’s when Beale was in charge there.

Beale admitted that he thought Cantwell would become a star – just as many others did – but that just hasn’t happened.

The Rangers boss added that he still thinks Cantwell is a ‘fantastic player’ and wonders if a move away from Norwich can reignite his career.

“Todd was an excellent player when he was young and playing against my Liverpool Under 23s,” said Beale. “I thought he would go on and have a fantastic career. He had that at the start and he is maybe just looking for a move to reingite it but I think he is a fantastic player at a good age,” he added.

That all sounds like a manager who fancies signing Cantwell, and seeing Rangers bid for the playmaker wouldn’t be a huge surprise this month.
