Rangers are close to appointing Michael Beale as their new manager and it’s a move that appears to has been on his mind for a while now.

The Gers sacked Giovanni van Bronckhorst last Monday morning, brining an end to his time in the Ibrox dugout.

Van Bronckhorst had been in charge for just over a year and even guided Rangers into the Europa League final last season.

Yet with both domestic and Champions League form faltering, Rangers took the World Cup break to move on from Van Bronckhorst.

Rangers are close to appointing Michael Beale

It quickly became clear that Rangers had one top target in mind.

No, not Steven Gerrard – even with the former Rangers boss being sacked by Aston Villa last month.

It’s Michael Beale that Rangers want, the man who served as one of Gerrard’s assistant coaches at Ibrox.

Beale followed Gerrard to Aston Villa last November before deciding to become a manager on his own with QPR.

The 42-year-old has only been in charge for 22 games but is already set to land a huge role.

Rangers have made Beale their top target to replace Van Bronckhorst and The Athletic’s David Ornstein claims that Beale has already arrived in Glasgow to finalise his return.

Sky Sports claim that Beale has wanted to become Rangers manager for some time and that QPR were made aware of that dream when they appointed him over the summer.

Beale seemingly told QPR that if Rangers came calling, it was a move he would be very keen to make.

QPR accepted that as they gave him the job but surely didn’t expect the move to happen so quickly.

Beale has remained close with the Rangers board and sporting director Ross Wilson, opening up this route back to Glasgow.

This is still a gamble given Beale’s inexperience but Rangers are pressing ahead and a deal should be imminent.
