Charlie Nicholas believes Rangers have a big problem on their hands as Michael Beale needs to find a new goalkeeper in the very near future.

The former Celtic man and current pundit has been speaking to the Scottish Daily Express about Rangers and their goalkeeping situation.

Rangers beat Hibernian 3-2 in the Scottish Premiership last week but fell behind to a very soft opener.

A corner whipped into the six yard box was headed home easily by an unmarked Ryan Porteous with veteran goalkeeper McGregor almost motionless.

Nicholas believes this only highlights yet again that Rangers need to find a new goalkeeper.

Nicholas claims that if McGregor take a cross in the six yard box then he simply should’t be in the team and should have retired over the summer.

The former Scotland international believes Rangers need a new stopper and the back line will be Michael Beale’s biggest concern at Ibrox.

“It has been a good start for Michael Beale but once again it shows Rangers need a new No. 1. I keep going back to it, but if Allan McGregor can’t come for a cross in his six yard box then he shouldn’t be in the team,” said Nicholas.

“He should have retired in the summer. I don’t think Beale can disguise the team’s defensive frailties but he did change tactics and got a result in the second half to get the win against Hibs. His defence will remain the biggest concern. Rangers should have bought another No. 1,” he added.

Rangers must sign a new goalkeeper in 2023

Nicholas is right here – it’s time for Rangers to figure out what on earth they are doing between the sticks.

It felt like everything was lined up for McGregor to retire at the end of last season yet he was then offered a new one-year deal.

That pretty much highlighted that Rangers don’t see Jon McLaughlin as a first-choice goalkeeper any time soon.

Robby McCrorie appears to have some talent but he turns 25 in March and still hasn’t been given his big chance.

If it isn’t going to be McCrorie, it’s time for Rangers to go and spend on a new stopper.

Beale would surely love a goalkeeper like Seny Dieng, his stopper at Queens Park Rangers, or even a Daniel Bachmann, the former Kilmarnock goalkeeper who is now at Watford.

Rangers need to have targets identified for this role as Beale will struggle to challenge Celtic with such a key position seemingly being overlooked.
