Rangers keeper Allan McGregor has been named SPFL Premiership Player of the Year after a string of breathtaking displays for the Light Blues this season – and the veteran shotstopper has paid tribute to his Ibrox team-mates, insisting a host of them could have beaten him to the award.

The veteran has been a massive driving force in the Gers’ surge to the title this season, recording 16 clean sheets as the Rangers backline shut up shop and made life miserable for opposition forwards.

After picking up the award yesterday, McGregor insists the “most important” prize will come later this afternoon when the Rangers number one and his teammates are presented with the Premiership trophy following the clash with Aberdeen at Ibrox.

“It is a big thing, obviously. Individual awards are good but the most important one was the league this season,” McGregor told Rangers TV.

“There are a lot of players who could have won it in this team to be honest, but the most important thing was the league.

“If you look at goalkeepers and defenders, they may get the praise [for clean sheet records] but it is the whole team that does it.

“Right from the front three, they have been brilliant this season. It is a big thing – not the be-all and end-al, but once it is here, it is a big thing.”

The veteran recently signed a new deal to remain at Ibrox for another year and take him beyond his 4oth birthday next year.

With the Gers set to return to the Champions League, as well as defending their Scottish Premiership title, next season McGregor could again prove to be crucial for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers.
