Rangers icon has praised referee Nick Walsh for his “tremendous” decision to allow play to continue in the build-up to Kemar Roofe’s opener in this afternoon’s Old Firm at Ibrox – before slaughtering likely future Celtic captain Callum McGregor for the “crazy” tackle that earned him a red card.

Walsh let play continue despite a wild lunge by McGregor with Roofe ending the move by chesting the ball into the back of the net to kick off the conprehensive win for Steven Gerrard’s side.

McCoist was left baffled by McGregor’s attempt at a challenge as he slated to experienced Old Firm campaigner for such a risky challenge while already on a booking.

“First thing you’ve got to say, tremendous refereeing to allow it to continue,” McCoist said on Sky Sports during the 4-1 win.

“We’re very quick to criticise when they make mistakes, great refereeing in allowing the game to flow and go on.

“But at the same time, he’s on a yellow card. Why go to ground?

“Why do you go to ground and give yourself an opportunity to pick up another yellow card?

“It’s crazy.”

The result leaves Rangers 23 points clear ahead of Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership and sees the Gers go unbeaten against their bitter rivals for a full season for the first time since 1999/2000.
