Glasgow Rangers were reportedly interested in bringing Andre Gray to Ibrox on loan during the summer transfer window.
Rangers set their sights extremely high this summer, with the Evening Times reporting back in April that Steven Gerrard was interested in signing Andre Gray on loan for this season.
It was always going to be an incredibly ambitious move. The Evening Times reported that Gray had cost Watford £18 million, and he was hardly out of favour at Vicarage Road, having made 29 Premier League appearances last term.
It would have been a massive statement from the Gers to get the 28-year-old, who has scored 21 goals in the top flight for Burnley and the Hornets. But perhaps Rangers have made an even bigger statement since missing out on the striker.
Steven Gerrard’s men have been ruthless during the opening weeks of the season. They have scored 24 goals in just seven games, including 10 in their last two fixtures.
While they have faced some poor opposition in a couple of their Europa League qualifiers, it cannot be overlooked that they put four past Midtjylland last week, while Hibernian had to pick the ball out of the net on six occasions at the weekend.
Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos scored six of those 10 goals, and half of the Gers’ goals in total. They now appear to have the ability to blow any team away and Defoe emphatically proved at the weekend that Gerrard’s men are no longer relying on the Colombian to shoulder the goalscoring burden.
Of course, Gray would have been an outstanding signing had Rangers managed to agree a loan deal. But their form at the start of this season suggests that they will not be kicking themselves for not getting a deal done for an £18 million Premier League striker.
