Rangers are keen on Mateo Cassierra – and his manager doesn’t seem all that sure that the striker will be staying at Sochi this summer.

The Gers reached the Europa League final but lost to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Winning the Scottish Cup was a decent consolation prize but having also lost the title to Celtic, Rangers need to progress this summer.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst needs reinforcements this summer and another striker has to be on the radar.

No matter what happens with Alfredo Morelos, Rangers need more firepower – and they could go for his compatriot Cassierra.

Rangers are keen on Mateo Cassierra

Earlier this week, Russian reporter Roman Naguchev claimed that Rangers are keen on Cassierra.

Naguchev suggested that Rangers had already made contact with Sochi over a deal and Giovanni van Bronckhorst knows the striker well.

Van Bronckhorst was in charge of Feyenoord when Cassierra joined their bitter rivals Ajax in 2016.

The Colombian attacker only managed five goals in 34 games for Ajax and has been somewhat nomadic in recent times.

Loans to Groningen and Racing didn’t reap many rewards but a decent spell with Belenenses in Portugal resulted in joining Sochi last summer.

Cassierra has been a sensation in Russia with 14 goals and six assists in just 22 games for Sochi.

Cassierra, 25, is now attracting interest again with Rangers potentially looking to sign him.

Sochi boss Vladimir Fedotov has now spoken to Match TV in Russia about Cassierra’s future.

Fedotov is sensitive to the issue surrounding Russia’s conflict with Ukraine and understands situations with his players could change quickly.

Yet right now, Fedotov is happy that all of his players are under contract and not walking away.

Fedotov added that Cassierra works so hard on and off the pitch whilst praising his desire to get better and better.

“At the moment, all have valid contracts,” said Fedotov about his squad. “We understand that the world is changeable and very mobile, everything is possible, but at the moment there is no information. The off-season may bring some surprises, but this is a life situation and we hope that we will cope with all situations perfectly.”

“The guy loves what he does and works selflessly in training. This is the basis, he is professional, disciplined. Most importantly, he has a desire not to stop there, and we will help him in this,” he added.

That’s the kind of attitude Van Bronckhorst will love, and we could see Rangers move for Cassierra this summer.
