Rangers want Mateo Cassierra and the Sochi striker has talked up the prospect of working with Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The Gers need a big summer as they look to back Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the transfer window.

Guiding Rangers to the Europa League final means there is plenty of hope for the future under the Dutchman.

Yet after a number of disappointing windows, Rangers need to add first-team quality to chase down Celtic.

A new striker is a must for Rangers as they seek more goalscorers and a hot name in the mix is Sochi hitman Cassierra.

Rangers want Mateo Cassierra

Russian reporter Roman Naguchev claimed in May that Rangers were taking a strong interest in Cassierra.

Cassierra, 25, was a hot prospect when Ajax signed him from Deportivo Cali in 2016.

Yet he has now become something of a nomad and joined Sochi from Belenenses last summer.

That move has proven to be a masterstroke for all involved as Cassierra has racked up 14 goals and six assists in 22 games for the Russian side.

The Colombian is now attracting major interest and Rangers appear to be keen.

Alfredo Morelos became a roaring success at Rangers so why not try and work similar magic with another Colombian striker?

A matter of days ago, Cassierra was quoted by the Daily Record as saying that he hopes to sign for a new club in the next week or so.

Cassierra then highlighted Giovanni van Bronckhorst, noting that he was in charge of Feyenoord when Cassierra joined Ajax,

“I hope within the next week or so, my future will be confirmed and I will sign for a club who are good for me,” said Cassierra. “My priority is to stay in Europe because I have been here for five years now. The manager of Rangers knows me because when I was at Ajax, he was the manager of Feyenoord. So there are options for me that need to be evaluated,” he added.

The Daily Record now have more comments from Cassierra as he this time talked about potentially joining River Plate, who are alongside Rangers in the race for him.

“The situation is really complicated in Russia, but now I am resting,” said Cassierra. “The season was tough. Later with my agent I will go in to see what is best for me, for my family. Because of the war in Russian territory, it is somewhat difficult. Hopefully it can be fixed. Personally, the priority is to be in Europe. I’ve been abroad for five years, in different countries and leagues. But as I say, we are in time to rest and now nothing can be ruled out.”

“There was also talk about Rangers. The coach knows me. There are possibilities. River is something that has been talked about a lot at the end of last week. But I don’t know anything, a week ago we finished and the possibilities have to be seen,” he added.

That Cassierra seems so willing to talk about Van Bronckhorst in multiple interviews suggests he has a strong interest in joining Rangers and this may be a deal for the Gers to chase in the coming days.
