The Glasgow Rangers cult hero is pleased with how the Ibrox striker’s disciplinary record has improved for Steven Gerrard and co – but there’s room to be better.

Alfredo Morelos of Rangers walks out to inspect the pitch before the Betfred Cup Semi Final at Hampden Park on October 22, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Glasgow Rangers cult hero Marco Negri has praised Ibrox goal machine Alfredo Morelos for his improving disciplinary record, but added that the player has a lot of room to be better for Steven Gerrard and co, in conversation with Herald Scotland.

The 23-year-old was in prolific form last season, weighing in with an impressive 30 goals in all competitions, but on the flip side he picked up numerous red cards and lengthy bans, which led to some Rangers fans wondering whether the cons outweighed the pros.

However, not only is the £1million signing (Scottish Sun) continuing to score plenty of goals this season – 12 in 15 games plus three assists in all competitions – but his disciplinary record has improved massively, with just three bookings picked up in that time according to Transfermarkt.

Negri has claimed that that veteran striker Jermain Defoe has been a positive influence on his teammate even though the duo tend not to line up at the same time for the Gers, and went on to praise Morelos’ characteristics, but he thinks there’s a lot more potential within the Colombian.

“It’s a very important part of the game – staying on the pitch,” Negri told Herald Scotland. “If you are out you can’t help yourself, you can’t help your team. If he stays on he can play, score and win the game for his side. Morelos will have seen how Defoe trains and plays and will have learned from him.

“Can Defoe and Morelos play together? It will be good to see. But the most important thing is for a coach to have many different solutions and ways to win a game. Morelos is very powerful, very good when he has a lot of space in front of him. He can certainly score. But he can develop. For me, he has a lot of room to be better.”

Rangers are next in action today at Ibrox against Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.
