The Ibrox boss was asked about recent interest from China in the Rangers striker.

The Daily Record report that Steven Gerrard laughed off the suggestion that Alfredo Morelos is the subject of mega-money interest from China, declaring he was ‘unaware’ of any clubs coming in for him.

Earlier on Wednesday, Sky Sports reported that the player had rejected a huge £30m offer from Chinese Super League side Hebei China Fortune across a three-year contract.

That roughly amounts to an eye-watering £192,000-a-week, potentially making the Colombian one of the best paid players around.

Sky reckoned that the club were willing to pay more than £15m to Rangers for his services too.

However, Gerrard appeared to brush it all off, telling The Record: “I’m unaware of it. There have been no bids. It is as you were from the last time.”

Something doesn’t quite add up about the bizarre transfer rumour and not just because of Gerrard’s comments.

The contract reportedly available to Morelos is an amount of money bordering on the ludicrous, even taking into account the Chinese top-flight being awash with money.

The 23-year-old is talented and one of the best players in Scotland, but would a team really pay him £192k as a weekly wage, before tax, at this stage of his career?

A look at Hebei’s squad also reveals they already have a full quota of foreign players at the club, with Chinese sides only able to register four at any one time and only able to play three in matches.

The side may well have shed one of Marcao, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Fernandinho or Javier Mascherano, but their transfer window shut on Wednesday, giving them little to time to arrange things.

There’s also an intriguing snippet in The Daily Record’s report. The paper say that the interest left the Ibrox club puzzled, with a feeling amongst senior sources being that “agents have been trying to drum up interest” around the striker.

That could well be the root of the issue here and perhaps a problem for the Gers heading into the final few weeks of the transfer window. Are his representatives trying to push an exit, or are they simply trying to keep him in the headlines?

In the meantime, Rangers fans can at least look forward to the player continuing to bang in the goals, having already netted four this season.
