Katic was a regular for Rangers in the opening weeks and months of the season following his move from Slaven Belupo in the summer transfer window for a fee reported by Sky Sports to be worth £2 million.
The 22-year-old defender, though, is struggling for playing time at the moment and is unlikely to feature in Rangers’ Scottish Premiership game against Heart of Midlothian away from home this afternoon.
Rangers manager Gerrard has challenged the Croatia international to re-establish himself in the Gers’ starting lineup.
Gerrard told The Scottish Sun: “Katic is fine. We have four centre-halves pushing for two places in the team. That’s life. It’s a good test for him. He needs to try and play his way back into the team.
“Connor Goldson and Joe Worrall were both outstanding the other night. Gareth McAuley was outstanding last weekend. There’s the challenge for Katic and the other players.”
Depth in squad
Rangers do have some very good central defenders, such as Connor Goldson and Joe Worrall, and Gareth McAuley is also playing well at the moment.
Katic is only 21 years of age, and it was always going to be hard for the youngster to play week in and week out for Rangers this season.
Rangers are third in the Scottish Premiership table at the moment with 27 points from 13 matches, just two points behind leaders and bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic.
