Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has hit back at Livingston boss Gary Holt after a war of words erupted ahead of the two sides’ match on Sunday in the Scottish Premiership, The Scottish Sun report.

Holt was left furious by comments from the Ibrox man, suggesting that grievances about Livingston’s physicality in an earlier match between the two sides should have remained private (The Daily Record).

The back and forth didn’t really manifest itself in the game at Almondvale yesterday, with the Gers running out comfortable 2-0 winners.

After the match, Gerrard chose to address Holt’s criticism, suggesting that the Livingston boss should pay closer attention to what was actually said.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “Gary is entitled to his own opinion and whatever he wants to say.

“But I think he needs to read or look at my press conference properly. Not once did I say Ricki Lamie elbowed Joe Aribo last time, I said he led with his forearm.

“All I asked for in the press conference is protection for all players across the league and across the board.”

Livingston do offer a robust physical game when going up against a side that is likely to dominate the fixture. They’ve shown this season it can be very successful, highlighted by their victory over Celtic.

It was something that Rangers actually dealt with well on Sunday, so while it was in the forefront of Gerrard’s mind, he obviously worked with his players to counter that aspect of the home side’s game.

Ultimately Holt is looking to protect the reputation of his players and Gerrard is simply looking out for his, so there will be no winners in this exchange, off the pitch at least.

It does make future matches between the two clubs a little bit more interesting though.
