According to Sky Sports, former Liverpool assistant manager Pako Ayestaran is interested in taking the vacant manager’s job at Rangers.

The Gers are searching for a new manager after announcing Mark Warburton’s departure on Friday evening, confirming that he had tendered his resignation.

With assistant manager David Weir and head of recruitment Frank McParland also leaving Ibrox, Rangers face a major change over the coming weeks and months, with a number of managers already touted for the job.

Out of work managers such as Alex McLeish, Billy Davies and Frank de Boer have all been linked with returns to Ibrox, whilst Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes and St Johnstone’s Tommy Wright also suggested.

Now though, Sky Sports have added a new name to the list, as they claim that Pako Ayestaran is interested in taking Warburton’s place in the Rangers hot seat.

Ayestaran, 56, is best known for having been Rafael Benitez’s assistant manager at Liverpool, but the two had a public fall-out leading to Ayestaran’s departure from Anfield in 2007.

Since then, the Spaniard has moved into management himself, taking charge of Tecos, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Santos Laguna and most recently Valencia, where he won just three times in 12 games.

Now out of work, Ayestaran is looking to get back into football, and he is believed to have his eyes on the Rangers job, where fellow Spaniards such as Mikel Arteta, Nacho Novo and Carlos Cuellar have all thrived as player.

Ayestaran’s patchy managerial career may not put him at the top of the list of candidates for Rangers fans, but he could be an option to take charge until the end of the season for the Gers.
