Glasgow Rangers’ search for their new manager appeared to be reaching a conclusion, but there has been a twist at Ibrox.
Rangers appeared to be on the verge of announcing Derek McInnes as their new manager as the Aberdeen boss entered talks with the Dons about the role at Ibrox – however, there has now been a significant twist.
Aberdeen have confirmed on their official website this evening that McInnes will be staying at Pittodrie despite an approach from their Scottish Premiership rivals, seemingly leaving the Gers back at square one as they look for Pedro Caixinha’s successor.
So with McInnes almost definitely out of the frame, who does Sky Bet believe is now in contention to get the job?
Interestingly, McInnes is currently the third favourite at 7/1, but it would absolutely no surprise if his odds drift out further in the very near future given his decision to stay exactly where he is.
Instead, the new favourite is current caretaker Graeme Murty, with the Gers under-20 coach now 11/10 to get the job on a permanent basis. Murty has overseen four wins and two defeats since taking charge for a second time, and has led Rangers to second in the table, so he will surely have his backers amongst the Ibrox faithful.
Sky Bet list Alex McLeish as the second favourite currently, with the former Rangers boss now 6/1 to return to the role that he left 11 years ago, while Aitor Karanka is 9/1 and Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill is available at 12/1, just ahead of Dundee boss Neil McCann (14/1).
