Glasgow Rangers are still searching for their next manager, and a new second favourite for the Ibrox post has emerged with the bookies.
There is a new name near the top of the next Rangers manager betting market with Sky Bet, with Aitor Karanka joining Alex McLeish and becoming the joint second favourite for the Ibrox post.
Karanka has been out of work since leaving his job at Middlesbrough earlier this year, and Sky Bet now appear to believe that he could be a genuine contender for the job.
Sky Bet list the Spaniard as the 3/1 joint second favourite, which means that he is situated alongside Alex McLeish for the post, while Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes remains the favourite, with the former Gers midfielder available at odds of 1/2 – despite overseeing a heavy defeat at Ibrox when the Dons visited on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, current caretaker boss Graeme Murty is now available at 8/1, and well clear of the next cluster of names, with Frank De Boer listed at 20/1 and the likes of Ange Postecoglou, Michael O’Neill, Slaven Bilic and Tommy Wright at 22/1.
Karanka did a good job at the Riverside Stadium during his spell there – which lasted around three and a half years – consistently putting Boro in the promotion mix in the Championship before they finally went up in 2016.
Life in the Premier League did not exactly go to plan as they struggled for goals and were ultimately relegated, with Karanka leaving just a couple of months beforehand. But having proved that he is attracted to the jobs that seem to be more like long-term projects – more than three years in a job is something of a long-term stint in today’s game – perhaps the chance to try and lead Rangers back towards the top table will appeal to the 44-year-old.
