Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has confirmed a move for Manchester United talent Charlie McCann is “close” but insists that the signing of the talented teen is very much one for the future.
The 19-year-old has reportedly agreed a three-year deal with the Light Blues as the two sides thrash out a compensation package for the Irish youth international.
McCann joined United three years ago from Coventry City and was a standout in the Premier League’s U23s last season despite being considerably younger than many players he shared a pitch with.
Gerrard spoke highly of the Old Trafford youngster but wouldn’t be drawn on when a deal to bring him to Rangers would be completed.
“We’re certainly aware of Charlie McCann, he’s a good talent, a strong talent,” Gerrard said.
“It is close but there is nothing to report on that really. That will be a B team signing, for everyone’s information. Obviously, as a management team – if that happens – we’ll follow him really closely. We’ll analyse where he’s at and once he’s ready for an opportunity it certainly presents itself.”
McCann’s signing would be a bit of a coup for Rangers B and the midfielder would surely be a standout in the Lowland League for David McCallum’s side.
Pairing him with Charlie Lindsay in the middle of the pitch could potentially be a long-term plan for the Light Blues first-team with both players showing incredible promise early in their career.
The young Irishmen could well foreshadow their long-term Rangers futures by lifting the Lowland League trophy this season in a dress rehearsal for the Premiership trophy a few years down the line.
