Rangers have a ‘massive challenge’ with regards to stopping Celtic next season, Gary McAllister has admitted.
The Hoops have won nine Premiership titles in a row and it’s up to Steven Gerrard at Ibrox to stop their Old Firm rivals from making history next May by winning a 10th.
Thing is, there’s still quite a big gap between Celtic and Rangers in terms of quality.
Neil Lennon’s side were awarded the Premiership title in April after the season was finished early, but the Bhoys had a 13-point lead over the Gers at that time.
Rangers won 2-1 at Parkhead just before the winter break to move two points behind Celtic, but they were abysmal after the three-week hiatus, dropping 13 points and being dumped out of the Scottish Cup.
There’s no doubt that Celtic will be big, big favourites to reach the magical 10 next term – and McAllister, Gerrard’s assistant, is under no illusions as to how hard it’ll be to stop them.
He told The Scottish Sun: “Everyone has to embrace what is a massive challenge to stop a team from winning ten leagues in a row but we’re up for the battle.
“Making a good start is imperative and we’ve got to come out the traps and start the season well and then maintain it.”
This will be Gerrard’s third season in Glasgow and he simply has to deliver this time.
Getting Rangers into the Europa League proper won’t save him this time; he has to win a trophy and it doesn’t matter what it is, if it isn’t the Premiership.
