Rangers have reportedly decided not to renew their interest in Sunderland striker Ross Stewart after the Ibrox club were linked with the goal-getter in the summer. Rangers, instead, signed Antonio Colak and he has scored 14 goals.

Interest in the summer came about after 26-year-old Stewart was handed his Scotland debut. He scored 26 goals last season as Sunderland were promoted to the Championship. This term, he has eight goal involvements in seven games.

Stewart has five goals and three assists in those seven games in England. But, injury has seen him ruled out since for three months. It is said Stewart will be fit and ready to go after the World Cup break. They play Millwall on Saturday.

The Record now report that Rangers have decided not to follow up their summer interest in Stewart. That is, with Middlesbrough looking to raid their North East rivals for Stewart. New boss Michael Carrick wants to bring him in.

Colak’s form has been impressive. His 14 goals in 24 games has helped Rangers fans go without Alfredo Morelos this term, with the star criticised for his lack of fitness – and a poor attitude. His Ibrox deal comes to an end in June 2023.

So, Rangers could do with a striker. Cedric Itten has left, Kemar Roofe remains injury prone and Fashion Sakala is in and out of the side. Stewart might be the ideal signing. You would argue that he would be happy to provide cover at Ibrox.

Of course, his contract is due to expire at the end of the season. That would allow Rangers to approach Stewart on a pre-contract deal, something Boro would be unable to do. But, Rangers seem to have made their decision, for now.
