Pedro Caixinha will need to bring in a finisher if he is to challenge Celtic at Ibrox.

Rangers’ poor attempt at challenging Celtic in the Scottish Premiership this season has many contributing factors. One massive reason is the lack of a genuine goal scorer at Ibrox.

Kenny Miller is no spring chicken, Martyn Waghorn only scores against the smaller teams and Joey Garner is far from prolific.

Meanwhile Celtic have the choice of Moussa Dembele, who has scored 32 goals in 46 games this season or Leigh Griffiths, who has 14 in 31 and scored 40 times last season. Even Scott Sinclair has 22 this term.

Rangers’ main goal-getters, Miller, Waghorn and Garner, have just nine, 15 and eight between them which is simply nowhere near good enough.

If Rangers are to challenge Celtic again they need a 30 goal striker who regularly finds the net throughout the season. Miller in his prime, a Marco Negri type or an Ally McCoist.

The bulk of the club’s money this summer should surely go toward that end as a top quality finisher in the Scottish top-flight can take Rangers into a title challenge again.

Finding one they can afford, that is the challenge.
