Rangers lost to Frankfurt on penalties in the Europa League final – but Kenny Miller has questioned why Rangers man Aaron Ramsey was not brought on earlier. He did come on, but missed the all-important penalty.
Joe Aribo sent the travelling Rangers support into raptures just before the hour mark, as he raced through and gave the Gers the lead. However, Rafael Santos Borre equalised, after a mistake from Connor Goldson.
The game went the distance. After 120 minutes, it was only substitute Ramsey to miss – after he had come on to the field of play on 117 minutes. His tame penalty was saved by Kevin Trapp, using his feet to stop the shot.
It was the only one of 10 to be missed, and it was enough for Frankfurt to secure the Europa League trophy. Despite his penalty, Miller questioned why he had not been brought on earlier – during his analysis on BT Sport.
“There must be question marks about Aaron Ramsey’s fitness. This is why you bring him to the club, games like this. There’s no doubt he can bring something,” Rangers legend Miller said, during half-time of extra-time.
Miller questions on Rangers man Ramsey, despite penalty miss
Ramsey has struggled at Rangers since joining the club in January, on loan from Juventus. The Welshman was supposed to be a marquee signing, but he has suffered numerous injuries and issues with fitness.
His penalty summed up his time at Rangers. While unfortunate for Ramsey, it must not be forgotten what a run the Gers have had in reaching the final. They have been superb in Europe under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.
It remains to be seen if Ramsey will be kept at Rangers but after his poor loan, and now his penalty miss, it seems rather unlikely. Plenty have applauded Rangers in wake of the defeat, including Josh Windass.
