Rangers loanee Joe Worrall drops hint at summer plans

Glasgow Rangers have brought Joe Worrall to Ibrox on loan for the season.

Joe Worrall has told the Daily Record that he loves life at Rangers, but admitted that he would find it difficult to say that he wants to stay at Ibrox beyond the end of his loan spell with the Gers.

Worrall has been an important player for Rangers since arriving on loan from Nottingham Forest in the summer. He has not always kept the supporters on side, but Steven Gerrard has shown a lot of faith in him, handing him 22 appearances in all competitions.

With Forest happy to let him leave on loan in the summer, there will inevitably be some questions regarding his future come the end of the season. But Worrall has reiterated that he expects to be back playing with the Championship side next term – although he did joke that he may end up staying at Ibrox if an eye-watering fee is offered.

“I love it at Rangers, it’s a fantastic football club and has a massive place in my heart,” he told the Daily Record. But being on loan, it’s hard to say I want to stay. It’s a loan. I came on deadline day in August, happy to play for Rangers this season. The lads have been great and I love living in Glasgow, it’s brilliant.

“But as for signing permanently, if they want to buy me for £30m in the summer, then that would be fantastic! If not, I’ll be happy to go back to Forest. I want to win something here. It was the first thing the manager and the lads said to me when I walked in the door.

“I’m only here for a season but it’s vital for the club – because of what they’ve gone through – to get to finals and challenge for the league.”

Worrall does speak glowingly about Rangers, but it surely cannot do the centre-back any favours to be so publicly honest about where he believes his future lies.

When he makes mistakes as he did against Kilmarnock recently, his critics may argue that his heart is not in it in the same way that it is for a player who is committed to Rangers for a number of years.

That may not be the case at all, and it would be unfair to question Worrall’s motivation. He may see his future at Forest, but it is by thriving at Rangers that he will return to his parent club in a better position to the one he was in when he left.

But given that he has not always been the most popular player amongst the fans, some may question whether his comments will do his situation many favours.
