Glasgow Rangers forward Joe Dodoo scored his first goal since leaving Ibrox on loan in the summer.
It seems fair to suggest that of all the players who have left Rangers on loan this summer, Joe Dodoo is perhaps amongst the ones who appear to face the biggest uphill battle trying to force their way into Steven Gerrard’s plans when they return to Ibrox in the future.
Dodoo was one of Mark Warburton’s riskier signings during his time in charge, but his arrival was meant with some excitement given that he had been highly rated at Leicester City before his departure.
And there were initial signs that suggested that he was going to prove to be an inspired addition. A stunning brace at Partick Thistle during his first season will undoubtedly go down as the high point of his Gers career thus far, but he has struggled to make an impact since then.
A difficult loan spell at Charlton Athletic last season failed to ignite, and many would have felt that his exit for Blackpool in the summer presented the 23-year-old with his last chance to perhaps force his way into the plans at Rangers.
And while it has taken Dodoo a little while to get going again, there was a hint on Tuesday that he may be ready to make the most of his time at Bloomfield Road as he scored an excellent goal in the 2-0 win over Coventry City to open his account for his new club in his third appearance. The youngster latched onto a long pass with 10 minutes remaining before displaying plenty of composure to loft the ball into the net and kill off the game.
Dodoo will undoubtedly have to do a lot more for the duration of his loan if he hopes to prove a point to Gerrard ahead of his return, but he will be delighted that he is up and running for this season.
