Rangers loanee Jermain Defoe reflects on making Ibrox debut

Glasgow Rangers loanee Jermain Defoe bagged his first Ibrox goal at the weekend.

Jermain Defoe has told Rangers’ official website that he feels blessed to be playing at Ibrox at this stage of his career, and recalled having discussions with his agent about the atmosphere at the ground during the Gers’ European run earlier in the season.

Defoe marked his home debut for the Light Blues by getting on the scoresheet in the 4-0 win against St Mirren. The forward was given the chance to convert the home side’s fourth penalty of the game, and he emphatically dispatched the ball into the roof of the net.

After losing to Kilmarnock recently, Steven Gerrard’s men needed these last two league performances, which have seen Rangers secure two wins, concede none and score seven.

And after making his home bow on Saturday, Defoe suggested that the experience lived up to expectations that had actually been set earlier in the campaign before he had even joined the club.

“I always knew it was a special place to football and I feel blessed because at the end of the day towards the end of their career have the opportunity to come to a big club and play in front of amazing and passionate fans,” he told the club’s official website.

“I remember being at home in Bournemouth watching the European games and I had a conversation with my agent about the atmosphere.”

Rangers are yet to win four games in a row under Gerrard, so they have a chance to end that run when they travel to Aberdeen on Wednesday.

But a victory against the Dons will see Rangers make a much greater statement than if it was one of their other Scottish Premiership rivals standing between them and a fourth successive win.

Derek McInnes’ side are enjoying an excellent spell of form and sit just two points behind the Gers in the table. And with Celtic six points clear at the top, it really does not appear to be a game that Rangers can afford to not win.
