Rangers back-up goalkeeper Jak Alnwick is impressing out on loan.

Rangers goalkeeper Jak Alnwick was sent out on loan by Steven Gerrard after being told he did not figure in the manager’s plans.

It has done Alnwick a favour, with new signing Allan McGregor limiting Alnwick’s chances.

The decision to keep Wes Foderingham has meant Alnwick would have been spending most weeks in the stands.

He was sent out on loan to Scunthorpe United back in England and at the weekend he turned in one of his best displays yet.

Alnwick was Scunthorpe’s man of the match in a surprise 2-1 win over Burton.

The goalkeeper told the club website: “It’s always nice to make a few saves. Over the past couple of weeks, we have conceded a lot of goals via deflections, so I think we have been really unlucky.

“To be able to make a couple of really big saves against Burton shows what I can do and if I have to do that to help us win games, then that’s what I have to do, but it’s just a good feeling to be able to get that win.”

The victory will help Alnwick’s confidence and his chances at Rangers are not quite done yet.

It remains to be seen how long Allan McGregor has at Rangers as he turns 37 in January and his deal expires in 2020.

Second choice stopper Wes Foderingham is unlikely to be happy spending a second season as back-up.

If Foderingham chooses to move on, then Alnwick has a pathway to stay as Rangers’ first reserve next season.
