Herrera left Rangers this summer to join Santos Laguna on a season-long loan.

September 19, 2017 was the date Rangers striker Eduardo Herrera last found the back of the net in a Scottish League Cup outing against Partick. The powerhouse’s loan move to Mexican outfit Santos Laguna has not got off to the best of starts.
Herrera was just one of a handful of big-name moves made by former boss Pedro Caixinha last summer, who also brought Carlos Pena, Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso to the club – all have left permanently except from Pena, who is on loan.
The nine-time Mexico international managed just 24 appearances for Rangers last season – starting just two of those – and scoring only two goals following his big-money move from Pumas.
Herrera failed to make a single league appearance in 2018 as Graeme Murty ostracised the target man from his squad, instead bringing in Jason Cummings to act as back-up behind Alfredo Morelos.
Steven Gerrard’s introduction as manager did not change anything for Herrera, who was immediately shipped out on loan to Santos Laguna. But it seems the stench of his goal drought has followed him to North America.
Indeed, Herrera has now failed to score in six matches this season since joining Laguna, and has even been left on the bench as an unused substitute during Laguna’s last two league games.

Herrera’s drought has now stretched to over 11 months without a goal at professional level, and that poses a problem for Gerrard and Rangers, too.
The 30-year-old remains on a hefty contract at Ibrox until the summer of 2020. On loan at Laguna, it had been hoped that Herrera would rediscover his goalscoring touch in order for Laguna or other sides to sign him permanently – wiping him off the wage bill.
But he has, so far, failed to do that. With his contract expiring in two years, Rangers are at risk of having to pay his wages up until that date – with his form likely to mean no club will want to land him permanently.
