Pena is currently on loan from Rangers at Mexican side Necaxa.
Carlos Pena has finally got one over on former Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha as loan side Necaxa dispatched Caixinha’s side Cruz Azul 2-0 on Sunday evening in Liga MX.
Pena, 28, was signed by Caixinha for Rangers in the summer of 2017 from Chivas for a fee of £2.7million (Daily Star), but was only afforded just three league starts by the Portuguese boss before he was sacked in October 2017.
His Rangers career showed glimpses of revival, including a goal against Aberdeen in a 3-0 win at Ibrox under Graeme Murty but he was eventually told to rejoin Caixinha at Cruz Azul – completing an 18-month loan.
But problems re-occurred under Caixinha. Pena struggled to maintain any kind of discipline, caught urinating while intoxicated in a fountain and buying beer straight after a training session – still in Cruz Azul kit.
His temporary stay was cut short by Caixinha, and he has since joined Necaxa on a season-long loan where he has begun to show more promise. On Sunday, his Necaxa side faced Cruz Azul.
Though he started on the bench, 19-time Mexico international Pena came on at half-time to help Necaxa win 2-0 over Caixinha and his former loan side Cruz Azul. It will come as a sweet moment to Pena, who has overcome obstacles t reignite his career of late.
Pena did end up scoring five goals in 14 Rangers appearances from midfield, and he still has two years remaining on his Ibrox contract. Getting one up on Caixinha will only endear him to Rangers fans.
