Rangers winger Glenn Middleton returned to St. Johnstone on loan last week and the Scotland under-21 star admits he doesn’t feel “anywhere close” to being close to his best after making his second debut for the Saints yesterday.

Middleton helped the Perth side to a historic domestic cup double last season before returning to Rangers for pre-season but was allowed to head back out on loan again and jumped at the chance to go back to McDiarmid Park.

The Scotland under-21 star caught the eye with his performance in the 1-1 draw with Motherwell before being replaced after 71 minutes and hopes he can quickly get back to top form.

“I thought I was direct like I always want to be,” Middleton said, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“Overall I’m pleased with how I did and hopefully I can really kick on now.

“But I still don’t feel it’s anywhere close to what I can do. I back myself to do quite a lot on the pitch.

“Hopefully as the weeks go on I can start reaching that level again.”

Middleton’s Rangers future looks ropey with the Light Blues appearing to view his long-term future at wing-back.

However, with Middleton playing for St. Johnstone and Scotland under-21s in a more advanced role, he’s unlikely to get the minutes needed to really master the role.

While he could still fight his way back into the frame at Rangers as a winger, it seems more likely that he’ll be allowed to move on permanently before too long.

Middleton still has a couple of years left on his Rangers contract though so, if he is sold, the Gers should look to recoup a few quid on the former Norwich youngster.
