The Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is said to have wanted the centre-back at Ibrox.

The reported Rangers target, Jake Cooper, has told News at Den that ‘renewed interest’ from Steven Gerrard’s side was “never going to be an issue”.
Rangers are said to have offered £3 million for the Millwall centre-back before the close of the summer transfer window.
And it is claimed that Gerrard sent the Gers’ chief scout Andy Scoulding to check on Cooper again last month (Daily Express).
But the 23-year-old has since signed a new ‘long-term’ contract with the Lions, which should, for now at least, put paid to any hopes Rangers had of signing him.
Discussing the Ibrox side’s apparent interest, Cooper said: “It was never going to be an issue. After the transfer window in the summer that was done. That didn’t really faze me.
“It’s down to other clubs who they want to sign. I’m a Millwall player and I want to help the club improve.

“It did take some time to organise things and it was nice to get it over the line and come to an agreement with the club. Now it’s just about playing for Millwall and making a better future here at the club.
“I just focused on how I was playing and how the team was playing and let negotiations take care of themselves. I tried to influence my performances in that sense and thankfully it was agreed.”
Given Millwall’s precarious league position (22nd in the Championship), Rangers may keep an eye on Cooper ahead of a potential summer move.

The Gers stand to lose centre-backs Gareth McAuley and Joe Worrall (pictured, above) at the end of their deals in June.
