The young Rangers defender has yet to break into Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox plans.
The Rangers defender Lewis Mayo is open to leaving Ibrox on loan – even if it means moving overseas.
Mayo is one of a number of talented youngsters making waves below Steven Gerrard’s first team, although he has yet to follow in the footsteps of teamates Serge Atakayi, Stephen Kelly and Glenn Middleton, each of whom have made debuts under the Rangers manager this season.
The 18-year-old also has eyes on a spot in Gerrard’s side, but appreciates that such an opportunity may not arrive overnight.
Asked about his future plans in a Q&A session hosted by the Rangers Youth Development Company Twitter account on Tuesday, Mayo replied: “I am working my hardest every day to give myself the best chance (of breaking into the first team).
“If it was ever felt that a loan would be beneficial to me then I would be open to it and even experiencing football in foreign leagues.”
Mayo need only look to another young centre-back, David Bates, to see how heading abroad can have a positive impact on one’s career.
Bates joined Hamburg at the end of his Rangers contract in June of this year, and found himself in Scotland’s starting line-up just five months later.
