Richard Gough wants the Rangers manager to stay for years but thinks Liverpool will come knocking if their form dwindles.

Rangers legend Richard Gough feels Steven Gerrard is destined to manage Liverpool one day, The Scottish Sun report.

Rangers chairman Dave King has so far not had to field any interested parties in his manager since Gerrard was announced as the Ibrox boss last year.

However, Gough reckons that if things go south at Anfield, the Liverpool legend will be their first port of call.

As quoted by The Scottish Sun, the former Gers defender said: “I think most expect Steven to return to Liverpool one day and he probably will. But I certainly hope he’s at Rangers for another three or four years.

“I am always delighted when I see Liverpool winning because I know they will be happy with their manager, and that means we can keep hold of Steven.

“As soon as Liverpool start to lose I think Dave King will be getting a knock on the door. Gerrard won’t be able to refuse and I understand that.”

Given the very nature of his history with Liverpool, Gerrard is always going to have a long association with the club. However, he’s still a relative newcomer in the coaching game and has plenty of work to do to reach an elite level as a manager.

Without trophies in Scotland, the Ibrox boss’ managerial credentials will look pretty thin when it comes to securing a Premier League job, even with a distinguished playing career behind him.

No-one is going to be surprised if he ends up at Anfield one day, but Rangers fans don’t have anything to worry about quite yet.

The Reds are enjoying a fantastic period of success having just lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy. The prospect of Klopp leaving Merseyside any time soon is unthinkable.

On the immediate horizon for Gerrard is attempting to battle Celtic for domestic honours and potentially pushing his club forward in European competition.
