The former Manchester United and Chelsea midifelder will forever be fondly remembered at Rangers.
Rangers legend Ray Wilkins has admitted to the club’s official website that he wishes he’d stayed at Ibrox for one more season.
The 84-time England international midfielder swapped Paris for Glasgow in 1987 in search of more regular first-team football, assuming the deep lying midfield role vacated by Graeme Souness once he had ascended to the role as manager.
In the end, Wilkins only stayed at Ibrox for two seasons before moving south of the border to sign for QPR but that was more than long enough for him to cement his status as a legend at the club, later being elected into the club’s illustrious Hall of Fame.
And Wilkins admits that he should have remained in Rangers’ royal blue for one last hurrah.
“Yes I do [wish I’d stayed], albeit I had a great time at Queens Park Rangers,” Wilkins told the club’s official website. “Perhaps another year I could have played up at Rangers and stayed in the side.
“The fear I had was not being in the team. I was still at an age where I felt I could play but [Ian] Durrant and was playing so well it was going to be a difficult choice for Graeme.
“I took that choice away from him but looking back I could have stayed at Ibrox for another year, or at least finished that season.”
Nonetheless, Wilkins will be remembered for his committed displays with the Glasgow giants, not to mention his stunning volley in a 5-1 Old Firm thrashing of Celtic in 1988.
It’s fair to say the current squad could do with a midfielder of Wilkins’ character and quality with Mark Warburton’s side light years behind The Hoops at the top of the Scottish game.
